Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Cumberland University professor Michael Rex took to social media to celebrate the death of the Turning Point USA CEO and co-founder.

Rex, who teaches English and Creative Writing, later attempted to walk back his statements. University President Paul Stumb also released a statement addressing the matter.

The remarks sparked backlash from community leaders, including the lead pastor of The Journey Church, Erik Reed, who called on the university to take stronger action against Rex. U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn amplified the controversy by posting screenshots of the professor’s comments on X.

In response to public pressure, Cumberland canceled its Heifner-Martin Endowed Lecture Series, which was scheduled to feature former MSNBC Senior Analyst Matthew Dowd.

When asked by Fox 17 News whether Rex would face disciplinary action, President Stumb confirmed that action had been taken but declined to provide details.

Professor Rex has faced criticism in the past for his vitriolic comments on social media while maintaining his role as a professor at the university, even going as far as to share he meditated on killing his own parents back in 2017.

The following screenshots are reported encounters and interactions from former and current students at Cumberland University within classrooms and campus events.

A petition calling for Professor Rex’s removal from Cumberland University has also begun circulating among students and community members.

As of now, the university has not issued further statements. A protest organized by students and local residents is scheduled for September 12 at 8:00 a.m. to demand greater accountability.
