Week one of the Trump administration has been a whirlwind of executive orders, congressional hubbub, and rapid-fire news headlines. Hopefully you were too busy volunteering at church to catch it all. Here are the top tech updates of the week to keep you informed on anything and everything technology related.
1. Project Stargate Announced
President Trump unveiled a new AI investment project dubbed “Stargate” (not to be confused with the ‘90s TV show starring Richard Dean Anderson). In a scene reminiscent of The Apprentice, Larry Ellison of Oracle and Sam Altman of OpenAI were tapped as team leaders. $500 Billion in investment funding is said to be in the works from Masayoshi Son of SoftBank as the team hopes to MacGyver their way to AI supremacy. Concerns within the MAGA base have also emerged regarding Ellison’s vision of smart mRNA vaccines as well as with Altman’s involvement given his rocky past with Elon Musk.
2. DeepSeek AI Hits #1
Chinese owned AI company DeepSeek has officially hit number one in the Apple App Store topping Open AI’s ChatGPT. The company has reportedly spent far less than other AI companies and has taken the lead in a fraction of the time. Portions of the tech community have already anointed this app as the new industry leader. They may be at the tip of the spear now but it remains to be seen if DeepSeek will catch on like X’s Grok or flounder like Google’s Gemini.
3. TikTok Unbanned by Executive Order
The ban that temporarily shut down TikTok in the US was lifted through an executive order signed by President Trump. The app now has a 75 day window to either sell a majority of the company to US partners or face a reinstatement of the ban. A variety of buyers are rumored to be interested in the buying opportunity including Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski and “Shark Tank” businessman Kevin O'Leary. Although, no one is confirmed as of yet to be in talks with the owning company, ByteDance.
4. Starlink Cell Reception
Ever wanted to stream an episode of CrossPolitic on your phone from the middle of nowhere? That could soon be a reality, as Starlink is testing a cellular service through T-Mobile. The service has the potential to eliminate dead zones for customers worldwide. Exact pricing on the service is unclear, however, rumors are that it could come standard on certain T-Mobile plans. For comparison, the ROAM - Unlimited plan for Starlink is $165/month.
5. Cryptocurrency Executive Order
An executive order was signed by President Trump that aims to ban central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) while also increasing the US stockpile of crypto. This comes on the heels of the announcement of new meme coins $TRUMP and $MELANIA. President Trump has repeatedly called the idea of a CBDC “very dangerous” which is why he is seeking to keep the Federal Reserve out of the digital currency space. It's not clear yet exactly which coins will be part of the stockpile or what the overall size of the investment will be. The crypto market seems to be holding steady as of late with Bitcoin averaging around the 100k mark in January.
